Anti-ICE rally draws hundreds

On Friday, January 23, residents from across the Hudson Valley gathered at the intersection of Routes 17K and 300 in Newburgh to protest ICE and its actions in Minneapolis. More than a dozen organizations were involved in organizing the event, including Rally Middletown, the Mid-Hudson Valley Democratic Socialists of America and Indivisible Newburgh.

The rally was organized in solidarity with Minneapolis residents who were protesting ICE’s violent presence in their city. The demonstration featured speakers from the community, including Sister Yiliana of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, City of Newburgh Council Member Giselle Martinez, City of Poughkeepsie Council Member Daniel Atonna, and Orange County Legislator Genesis Ramos.

Notable speakers addressed policy solutions, including calls for County Executive Steven Neuhaus to end Orange County Jail’s contract with ICE and for Governor Kathy Hochul to pass the MELT Act and the New York For All Act to limit law enforcement collaboration with immigration enforcement.
